"This is really fantastic. Wonderful aromas of grapes, berries and
cherries. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with wonderfully refined tannins
and a long, long finish. Even better in bottle. A gorgeous wine. Best
after 2014." |
|
"Very powerful. Great wine." |
|
"The 2000 is a tremendous mouthful of Porto, a luscious, intoxicating
wine that combines power and grace, black fruit and schist. The supple
entry yields a persimmon redness, anticipating the big wallop of fruit
that builds then slowly tightens into a mineral-edged finish. Potent and
concentrated for years of development." |
|
"This is an impressive new kid on the vintage block from a first
class property. Good value too." |
|
"Um hino ao trabalho no lagar. A casta Sousão é determinante para o
perfil deste Vinho do Porto Vintage excepcional." |
|

João van Zeller and the Symington family are pleased to announce the release of their Quinta de Roriz 2000 Vintage Port in the spring of 2002.
Quinta de Roriz is one of the oldest and finest estates in the Douro and has been owned by the van Zeller family since 1815. Roriz was certainly the very first Quinta Port ever to be offered and the first Quinta to establish fame and reputation for the quality of its wines.
Roriz occupies 200 hectares and is one of the most spectacularly beautiful Quintas in the Douro. All the grapes are picked by hand and vinified in the Quinta’s own 8 granit stone lagares. The wines are then aged in the Quinta’s oak vats prior to bottling.
Only 2,000 cases of the very finest Port produced at the property in 2000 have been selected for bottling, all of which will be released En Primeur.
The viticultural year in 2000 was largely responsible for the outstanding quality of the wines produced at Roriz. Adverse weather conditions in May were detrimental to flowering and thus ensured low yields. Hot weather up to the vintage interspersed with some rain in August led to a text book maturation of the grapes, followed by ideal weather during picking.
Due to the particular micro-climate at Roriz it typically vintages earlier than other nearby properties. The 2000 vintage at Quinta de Roriz, thus began very early, on the 14th September. Over the next week, six lagares in the adega at Quinta de Roriz were filled, producing a total of 80 pipes of Port.
Yields were lower than had been predicted, but the quality of the grapes was excellent, with no signs of disease. Irrespective of the early start to the vintage, the grapes were very mature, with elevated sugar levels.
The colour was fantastic across the board as a result of good extraction obtained by working the lagares very hard (around 12 man-hours of treading or macacos per pipe).
Tasting Note
Opaque purple colour. On the nose great complexity, ripe black fruits with a mineral hint. On the palate huge concentration and tannic structure, with the Sousão component of the blend producing fine acidity.
