Quinta de Roriz
Douro DOC Reserva Red 2001

"Full-bodied, deep-colored and rich, with lip-smacking flavors of dark plum, blackberry jam, cocoa and a hint of French roast. Tannins build on the finish, but with an appealing silkiness; dark chocolate notes go on and on. A fine value. Drink now through 2008."

"The highest rated wine of all that I tasted is Quinta de Roriz {2001}Reserva, a blockbuster wine with deep colors, fat viscosity and powerful fragrances. Take a whiff once and you’ll get vanilla and raspberries. Let it rest for a few seconds and try it again. Now hints of tobacco, coffee, chocolate and leather start creeping in. This is a racy wine, for folks who like to spend several minutes sniffing their wines. By the time you taste it, the rich fruit, refreshing acidity and firm tannins will get your immediate attention, but the very long and harmonious finish is what will make you come back. If this wine had a French or Californian label on it, it would cost about $60"

"The vibrant depth of color and scent of oak char peg this as a modern style. Since when, after all, does Douro grow wines that are unrepentantly delicious? There’s no tannic austerity here, just lush black raspberry and blueberry fruit wrapped in the walnut skin flavor of oak. Perhaps the terroir expression will develop with age, but few sensible people would wait to drink this wine when it tastes as good as it does right now."

"A joint venture between the quinta's owner Joao van Zeller and the Symington family, this wine was aged in new oak for 12 months. The result is rich, with sweet but firm tannins, with flavors of red currant fruits and sweet figs. It could well age for 10 year or more, with its dark, intense aftertaste."

A Touriga dá-lhe a estrutura, a Roriz o tanino elegante, a Franca o perfume intenso, a frescura e acidez.

2001 experienced an extremely wet winter with quite mild temperatures. After an early bud burst, the number of bunches was high. With good climatic conditions during flowering, the scene was set for a large harvest at the Quinta. However, a period of intense heat during June together with a lack of rain at the end of August or before the harvest, led to a reduction in overall production, turning the 2001 harvest into an average year in terms of grape quantity. The grapes were in good condition when harvesting started. The start of the harvest was determined by the maturation state of the grapes, ie, an analysis of the development of sugars and acids in the grapes, as well as polifenolic maturation. The grapes were picked by hand between the 17th and 21st of September.

Grape Origins

The grapes came exclusively from vineyards situated at Quinta de Roriz, namely from the vines above Linhares and from D.Carlota.
