Today Roriz occupies 200 hectares forming a natural amphitheatre, falling
from the hilltops at 450 metres to the Douro River. It is one of the most
spectacularly beautiful Quintas in the Douro.
In the centre of the Quinta there is a small 'plateau' on which is situated the
winery, house and chapel. The vineyard occupies 42 hectares and is situated
between 125 and 250 metres. The position of the Quinta along the river and its
altitude are recognised as being ideal for the production of the Douro's very
best wines and is fully representative of the best of the classic river Quintas.
The grapes are picked by hand and vinified in the Quinta's own stone lagares.
The wines are then aged in the Quinta's oak vats prior to bottling.
Unique Soil
The classic schistous soil of the Upper Douro predominates, but the soil
composition and structure are particular to this property. The Quinta also has
tin and traces of gold. The mining activities at Roriz date from the days of a
religious Order, "Comenda das Tres Minas da Ordem de Christo" which during the
17th century exploited the rich ore deposits of the property. Archibald acquired
the property from this Order. The mining only ceased after the 2nd World War.
The unique mineral structure at Roriz brings a strong individual personality to
the wines.

Roriz has produced an average of 214 pipes (potentially 14,300 cases) each
year.
Some of the grapes are selected for the making of Vintage Port and for Douro
wine.
With both wines, the goal is to produce the finest that the Douro can offer. No
other Port will be sold under the Roriz name other than the finest possible
Vintage Port.

To this day, Tinta Francisca (wines renowned for their long ageing potential)
and other less fashionable varieties such as Sousão (which contributes excellent
colour and acidity), and Tinta Amarela (producing aromatic and balanced wines)
have been maintained.
These vines exist side by side at Roriz with the five classic varieties
associated with the Douro.
This undoubtedly contributes to the great complexity, concentration and tannic
structure of Roriz wines, that has been consistent throughout successive
vintages.
